Intro 🎙️
Are you an accountant looking to stay up-to-date with the latest industry news? Or maybe you are just starting out your career in accounting and want to get a head start. Either way, accounting podcasts are a great way to stay informed (at least if that’s your preferred way of learning 👂, I know it sure is mine, outside of LinkedIn). From technology tips to tax strategies, there is a podcast for every accountant.
I’ve spent the last month or so digging deep, and giving just about every podcast I could find a go – here's our list of the top accounting podcasts that will help you become a master of your craft.
As someone who is not an accountant, but has a massive curiosity about how technology can help accountants do better, I’ve found podcasts to be a great source of information and advice.
There are so many different topics out there that accounting professionals are covering on podcasts. If there’s one thing I have learned is that there is literally a podcast for everyone – student, professional, business owner, whatever your role there’s something for you.
Popular industry leaders were the first to crop up on my radar as I started my initial research, people like David Leary, Blake Oliver and Rob Brown to name a few. I’ve also found a few gems on the doorstep here in Australia and New Zealand.
Without further ado, here are my top 5 podcasts that I reckon are worth a listen (plus a few bonus ones I’ve been told to listen too) – if there’s anything that you think I should wrap my ears around I’d love to hear from you. I’ve also dropped in a few favourites, and as a bonus, we’ve embedded the podcast inline so you’ll be able to listen to the latest episode below ⬇️
“The Cloud Accounting Podcast” with Blake Oliver and David Leary
This was one of the first podcasts I came across as I frantically searched for the best cloud and accounting technology podcasts. The podcast covers a wide range of topics related to accounting, from technology and industry news to topics in accounting and tax professionals.
Conversations between David and Blake are super engaging – they are clearly both savvy individuals, and I find their knowledge of the latest trends unmatched. The podcast is a great blend of industry news and accounting technology plus there are some great interviews with industry leaders (granted it has an American lean, but that’s fine, it’s still all interesting).
Listening to this podcast has been quite eye-opening for me as someone new to the world of accounting. I’ve some pretty neat insight into how different aspects of the profession intertwine and have developed a good understanding on key issues impacting the industry at the moment.
One of my favourite episodes also has to be one of the latest ones: What AI Will Automate In Accounting With Erica Goode, CPA – the AI and ChatGPT nerd 🤓 in me just loved diving into how AI could help and also disrupt the world of accounting.
If you’re looking to stay ahead of the curve, this podcast is for you!
“The Accounting Influencers Podcast” with Rob Brown
They claim on the website that this is one of the world’s most popular accounting podcasts, and I get it!
Again, excuse the American lean – but this podcast is one of the more varied. Rob covers a wide range of topics that apply to all levels of experience
It’s also jam-packed full of interviews with successful accountants, and a number of what you’d perhaps consider accounting influencers – I guess the name makes sense 😉
A favourite episode which is an oldie, but a goodie, is from June 2021. Rob chatted with Mark Jenkins to talk about the importance of great client engagement, and what accounting firms can do to build better client relationships and start being more proactive advisors.
“The Successful Bookkeeper” with Michael Palmer
This podcast aims to empower both bookkeepers and accountants on their journey to success – as with the others there is a great range of interviews with industry leaders, but I also like that it branches out into other topics outside of the accounting and bookkeeping industry, with some episodes covering workplace culture, mental health, networking and communication skills, amongst a plethora of other topics.
If you’d like to learn to become a better human, this podcast won’t do that for you, but it will introduce you to topics that can help you grow as a professional.
With over 350 episodes, I’d be lying if I said I’d listened to everyone, and there are just too many to nail down a favourite – browse the back catalogue and find your own fave.
“The Accounting Tech Tar Pit” with Early Adopters Hub
Now for something a little closer to home – Jack Thiel and Yohan Trougouboff (both formerly FYI Docs) have recently launched a new podcast called the ‘The Accounting Tech Tar Pit’. Both Jack and Yohan are extremely passionate about emerging accounting technology and how it can help accountants.
Whilst in its infancy, the podcast explores what technology is emerging in the accounting space, and there is a lot to sink your teeth into around the potential pitfalls and rewards of doing things differently or adopting new solutions.
If you’re considering tech investments to improve your practice, this podcast is a must-listen, in fact, you’ll probably learn about tools that you didn’t even know existed.
“Ask The Accountant” with Johann Goree and Aaron Patrick
Hailing from the UK 🇬🇧, both Johann and Aaron are well known for their forward-thinking approach to accounting technology, and when it comes to almost every topic you can think of, you’ll find some nugget nestled in amongst each episode.
Similar to David and Blake, Johann and Aaron are engaging hosts and they keep you hooked on every episode.
You’ll find a diverse range of topics covered, from tax planning and compliance to practice management and growth strategies – as with most of these podcasts there are in-depth conversations with industry experts and practitioners.
If you want practical tips and guidance ‘Ask The Accountant’ really delivers to help accounting professionals navigate the exciting and the mundane.
Other Podcasts Worth A Listen
I mentioned at the start that I’ve been told of a few more, I just haven’t got around to sampling them – but perhaps you’ll beat me to it.
Small Firm, Big Impact by CA ANZ, is the latest that it sitting, ready to get stuck into – it’s aimed at small and medium-sized firms, and brings you practical and factual content from industry experts to help Chartered Accountants stay up-to-date with the latest information.
Last but not least, Cloud Stories with Heather Smith delves into the world of cloud accounting through interviews with industry leaders, app developers, and innovative practitioners. The show covers a variety of topics, including best practices for cloud adoption, app ecosystem insights, and the future of accounting technology.
That’s a wrap on the best accounting podcasts for you to listen to. No doubt, there are 100s of other excellent shows, and so if there is anything you’ve got on your list that you think we should give a listen I’d love to hear from you.
